3. How to reach to Mai Chau from Hanoi

There is various options traveling from Hanoi to Mai Chau to suit different preferences and budgets: 

  • By bus: It is one of the most common ways to get to Mai Chau Vietnam. You can take a bus at My Dinh Bus Station. The buses leave from My Dinh bus station at 6 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. The journey costs around 100,000-150,000 and lasts between 3.5 and 4 hours. If you want to stay in the villages of Lac or Pom Coong, ask the bus driver to drop you off there. You will be dropped off at the crossroads, were you can get a taxi to your accommodation.

Buses return to Hanoi at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Host families in your homestay or hotel can reserve this bus for you and arrange for you to be picked up from the village.

  • By private car or motorbike: These transports offer a scenic drive through the picturesque landscapes along the road. From Hanoi, head to Thang Long Highway, then turn left at Xuan Mai. Continue straight on Highway 6 and then turn into Mai Chau.

  • Grilled pork skewers: A must-try Mai Chau delicacy. Succulent pieces of marinated pork are skewered and grilled over charcoal, resulting in a smoky and juicy treat that pairs perfectly with a side of fresh herbs and dipping sauces.
  • Grilled freshwater fish: a perennial favorite at traditional Thai festivals. After that, the fish is skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled over charcoal until it turns golden and releases a mouthwatering aroma.
  • Banana flower salad: A refreshing and crunchy salad made from shredded banana flowers, herbs, and a tangy dressing. This traditional dish combines the mild bitterness of the banana flower with the zesty dressing.
  • Sticky rice with seven colors: A visually stunning dish that showcases the artistry of Mai Chau’s cuisine. This dish is made by steaming different types of sticky rice, each infused with natural colors such as pandan leaves, turmeric, and butterfly pea flowers.
  • Bamboo rice: To make a delicious bamboo tube of sticky rice, the chef first takes glutinous rice grown in Mai Chau, rinses it thoroughly, then stuffs it in a bamboo tube that’s been tightly sealed and then grilled over a charcoal brazier. After about an hour, you’ll have a fragrant bamboo tube stuffed with glutinous rice from Mai Chau.
  • Mountain snails: Another delicacy of Mai Chau is its mountain snails. The most popular way to have these snails is steamed with lemongrass. The natural sweetness of the snail meat with the lemony flavor of the lemongrass is a winning combination.
