Located about 60km west-southwest of Hue, A Luoi is a mountainous district sandwiched between the A Shau Valley and the border with Salavan and Sekong provinces, Laos. Vietnam War veterans and historians will be familiar with the name, as it was the location of several US military bases that saw fierce battles, including Asho Airport and Hamburger Hill, immortalised in a 1987 film. The district encompasses 100 km of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail. Visiting A Luoi, you can stay at stilt houses uniquely designed and built by ethnic minority people such as Guol house of Co Tu people, Rong house of Ta Oi people and Dai house of Pa Co people. Made mainly from environmentally friendly materials such as wood, bamboo and palm leaves, the stilt houses will bring visitors close to nature.
