DETAILED DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY:

DAY 01: ARRIVAL IN OSAKA – WELCOME TO WESTERN JAPAN (NONE)

Arrive in Osaka, where your local representative will welcome you and arrange the transfer to your hotel.

After check-in, the remainder of the day is free.

Beginning the journey in Osaka rather than Tokyo gives the tour an interesting rhythm from the outset.

Osaka is energetic, informal and strongly associated with food, commerce and street life.

If you arrive early enough, step outside for an easy independent walk.

There is no need to begin with formal sightseeing. Simply observing the city is enough for your first evening.

Restaurants glow beneath railway lines, shopping arcades stretch across neighbourhoods and the streets become increasingly animated as local residents finish work and meet for dinner.

For those arriving later, take the opportunity to rest.

Tomorrow introduces the city properly through Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Castle and the famous commercial districts.

Over the following two weeks, the route will gradually move from western Japan through Kyoto and the mountain interior before ending in Tokyo.

This means the journey itself tells a story: Osaka and Hiroshima first, then Kobe and Kyoto, followed by Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Takayama and finally Tokyo, Nikko and Kamakura.

It is a far more comprehensive geographical journey than a simple Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka itinerary.

Tonight, however, allow yourself the luxury of arriving slowly.

Highlights: Arrival Osaka • Airport transfer • Free evening

Meals: None
Overnight: Osaka.

DAY 02: OSAKA – UMEDA SKY BUILDING, OSAKA CASTLE & DOTONBORI (B)

Begin your first full day at the remarkable Umeda Sky Building.

The source describes its open-air Sky Garden Observatory approximately 173 metres above ground, offering a 360-degree view over Osaka.

From this height, one of Japan’s great urban regions spreads towards the horizon.

Continue to Osaka Castle.

The program links the castle with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who began construction here in 1583 while establishing Osaka as an important base during the process of Japanese political unification.

The source also notes that the original complex was considerably larger than today’s reconstructed landmark.

Later, change the pace entirely with time around Shinsaibashi, Namba and Dotonbori.

This is the Osaka that many travellers remember most vividly.

Shopping arcades, giant signs, restaurants and food stalls create an atmosphere very different from Kyoto’s refined heritage districts.

Rather than rushing through the area, allow time to enjoy Osaka at street level.

The city is at its most appealing when you can simply wander, look into restaurant kitchens, watch local crowds and perhaps try something unfamiliar.

Strolling shopping districts dotombori

The contrast between the morning and afternoon is precisely what makes the day effective.

You have seen Osaka from a panoramic observation deck, encountered its historical symbolism through the castle and then descended into the everyday energy of its commercial streets.

Highlights: Umeda Sky Building • Sky Garden • Osaka Castle • Shinsaibashi • Namba • Dotonbori

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Osaka.

DAY 03: OSAKA – HIROSHIMA – MIYAJIMA – OSAKA (B)

Transfer to Shin-Osaka Station and board the Shinkansen to Hiroshima with reserved seats.

Upon arrival, continue towards Miyajima.

Visit Itsukushima Shrine, where architecture and the island setting create one of the most recognisable sacred landscapes on the itinerary.

The atmosphere feels far removed from yesterday’s Osaka shopping districts.

Here, the relationship between shrine, water and surrounding landscape becomes the central experience.

After Miyajima, return to Hiroshima city.

Continue to Peace Memorial Park, Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome.

This is one of the journey’s most serious and emotionally significant experiences.

The value of the visit lies not only in understanding an event in twentieth-century history but also in seeing how Hiroshima has preserved places of memory within a modern living city.

Peace memorial park and museum | enchanting 14-day japan discovery from osaka to tokyo via kyoto, kanazawa, and takayama
Peace memorial park and museum

The shift from Miyajima to Hiroshima gives the day extraordinary emotional depth.

The morning is defined by sacred beauty and landscape; the afternoon by remembrance and reflection.

Late in the day, return to the station and travel by Shinkansen back towards Osaka.

Arrive at the hotel in the evening.

Highlights: Shinkansen • Miyajima • Itsukushima Shrine • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park • Peace Memorial Museum • Atomic Bomb Dome

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Osaka.

Operational Note: One source sentence says “Arrival in Kyoto” after explicitly stating the return train is heading to Osaka. The listed hotel remains in Osaka, so this is treated as an obvious copy-paste error.

DAY 04: OSAKA – KOBE – KYOTO (B)

Leave Osaka and travel towards Kobe.

Begin at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden.

Travel by ropeway up the mountainside and enjoy views over Kobe as the city, harbour and surrounding urban landscape open below you.

Return downhill and continue to Kitano Ijinkan, Kobe’s historic foreign residence district.

The source specifically lists Kazamidori House, Uroko House and England House among the properties associated with this sightseeing program.

The neighbourhood introduces another dimension of Japanese history.

Rather than temples or feudal castles, Kitano reflects the international connections that shaped Kobe’s development.

Continue to a Sake Brewery Museum in the Nada area.

Learn about the history of local sake production and the brewing process.

The program also includes an opportunity to taste freshly pressed sake or Junmai sake, subject to the operating arrangements of the brewery.

The day’s combination is unusually varied: mountain views, international-era architecture and traditional beverage culture.

After sightseeing, continue by rail towards Kyoto.

Meet your local guide on arrival and transfer to the hotel.

The evening is free.

Tomorrow the focus shifts into the classical heart of Japan through Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Gion.

Highlights: Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden • Ropeway • Kitano Ijinkan • Historic Foreign Houses • Sake Brewery • Kyoto

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 05: ARASHIYAMA – KYOTO SIGHTSEEING (B)

Begin the day in Arashiyama.

Visit Tenryu-ji Temple, followed by the Bamboo Path and Togetsu Bridge.

The original itinerary describes Tenryu-ji as one of Arashiyama’s representative Zen temples and draws attention to its garden landscape.

Walk into the bamboo grove.

The appeal lies as much in the atmosphere as in the photograph: high bamboo creates a vertical landscape where sound and light change as you move.

Continue to Kinkaku-ji – the Golden Pavilion.

Its visual power comes from the combination of golden architecture, pond and surrounding garden.

Kiyomizu temple | enchanting 14-day japan discovery from osaka to tokyo via kyoto, kanazawa, and takayama
Kiyomizu temple

Later, visit Kiyomizu-dera before descending into Sannenzaka.

The source describes the district through its Kyoto-style stone paving and traditional machiya buildings, identifying it as a preserved historic streetscape.

Sannenzaka

After lunch, finish around Gion.

Traditional façades, narrow lanes and the history of the hanamachi district create a distinctly Kyoto atmosphere.

The source links Gion with the tradition of maiko and geiko entertaining in local teahouses.

The strength of today’s program lies in variety without losing coherence.

Every attraction reveals a different expression of Kyoto, yet the overall theme remains the city’s relationship with aesthetics, spiritual tradition and preserved architecture.

Highlights: Tenryu-ji • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove • Togetsu Bridge • Kinkaku-ji • Kiyomizu-dera • Sannenzaka • Gion

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 06: KYOTO – NARA & FUSHIMI INARI (B)

Travel towards Nara, where some of the itinerary’s most monumental religious architecture awaits.

Begin at Todai-ji Temple.

Its enormous Nandaimon Gate rises approximately 25.4 metres according to the source program, creating an impressive entrance towards the temple complex and Great Buddha.

Todaiji temple | enchanting 14-day japan discovery from osaka to tokyo via kyoto, kanazawa, and takayama

Continue through Nara Park, where deer move freely among visitors.

The atmosphere becomes immediately more relaxed, especially for families, yet the park is also an integral part of the cultural landscape surrounding Nara’s temples and shrines.

Nara park

Continue to Kasuga Taisha.

The program also includes Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Kyoto’s most recognisable Shinto landscapes.

Walk beneath the red Senbon Torii gateways.

The experience is visually dramatic but also highly atmospheric as the pathway climbs into wooded surroundings.

Return to Kyoto for another overnight.

The day offers a useful counterpoint to yesterday’s polished Kyoto landmarks.

Nara feels broader and more spacious, while Fushimi Inari provides a completely different expression of religious landscape through repetition, colour and movement.

Highlights: Todai-ji • Great Buddha • Nandaimon • Nara Park • Kasuga Taisha • Fushimi Inari • Senbon Torii

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 07: KYOTO – KANAZAWA SIGHTSEEING (B)

Leave Kyoto and begin the journey north towards Kanazawa.

The source program uses the Limited Express Thunderbird and a connecting Shinkansen at Tsuruga Station.

It specifically notes that the train-to-train connection at Tsuruga is made without an assistant, an operational detail that should remain clearly communicated to guests.

Arrive in Kanazawa before midday and begin sightseeing.

Explore Higashi Chaya Machi, whose historic streets immediately create a more intimate atmosphere after the grandeur of Kyoto.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka
Higashi chaya machi

Continue to celebrated Kenrokuen, followed by the Kanazawa Castle Garden.

The three stops work together particularly well.

Higashi Chaya introduces historic urban character, while Kenrokuen and the castle garden shift the emphasis towards landscape design and the former centre of local power.

Kenrokuen | enchanting 14-day japan discovery from osaka to tokyo via kyoto, kanazawa, and takayama
Kenrokuen

Kanazawa is one of the reasons this itinerary stands apart from a standard first-time Japan route.

Travellers who only follow Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka can miss the quieter regional cities where traditional architecture and landscape often feel less overwhelmed by the scale of major metropolitan tourism.

After sightseeing, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Tomorrow the journey goes even deeper into the mountain interior, travelling through the famous village landscape of Shirakawa-go before reaching Takayama.

Highlights: Limited Express • Shinkansen • Higashi Chaya Machi • Kenrokuen • Kanazawa Castle Garden

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kanazawa.

DAY 08: KANAZAWA – SHIRAKAWA-GO – TAKAYAMA (B)

Travel by coach into the mountains towards Shirakawa-go.

The landscape and architecture here are completely different from the major cities visited so far.

The source program highlights the village’s distinctive gassho-style houses, which form the central focus of the sightseeing stop.

Take time to appreciate the village as a complete cultural landscape rather than simply photographing individual houses.

Mountains surround the settlement, while traditional architecture creates a strong sense of continuity with an older rural Japan.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka
Shirakawago villege

Continue onwards to Takayama.

Visit Takayama Jinya, another attraction explicitly included in the itinerary, before walking along atmospheric Takayama Sanmachi Street.

After the broad rural scenery of Shirakawa-go, Sanmachi provides a more urban but still highly traditional environment.

Narrow streets and historic façades make Takayama feel worlds away from Osaka.

Today is arguably one of the itinerary’s strongest “off-the-classic-route” days.

The experience does not rely on Japan’s most internationally famous temples or skyscrapers.

Instead, it reveals regional landscapes and townscapes shaped by the mountain environment.

Check in and enjoy the evening at leisure in Takayama.

Highlights: Shirakawa-go • Gassho-style Houses • Mountain landscapes • Takayama Jinya • Sanmachi Street

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Takayama.

DAY 09: TAKAYAMA – NAGOYA – TOKYO (B)

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka
Travel to tokyo by bullet train via nagoya

Enjoy the morning at leisure in Takayama.

Perhaps revisit the old town, enjoy a relaxed breakfast or simply appreciate a slower start before the long journey east.

In the afternoon, travel towards Tokyo via Nagoya, using the Limited Express and Shinkansen.

The source specifies that a guide will meet you on the platform at Tokyo Station and assist with the transfer to your hotel.

The geographical shift today is dramatic.

Takayama’s mountain setting gradually disappears and, after the efficient rail journey, the scale of Tokyo suddenly returns.

Yet Tokyo will feel different now than it might have at the beginning of a tour.

You have already travelled through Osaka, Hiroshima, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, Kanazawa and the mountain communities.

The capital becomes not “Japan” in itself, but another fascinating layer within a much more diverse national story.

After hotel check-in, the remainder of the evening is free.

Tomorrow begins your Tokyo sightseeing program.

Highlights: Takayama leisure time • Limited Express • Shinkansen • Tokyo arrival

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 10: TOKYO CITY SIGHTSEEING (B)

Depart around 08:00 for a full Tokyo sightseeing day.

Begin at the Imperial Palace East Garden, subject to its normal opening days.

Continue to Hamarikyu Gardens, once associated with feudal and Tokugawa residences and surrounded by distinctive seawater moats.

Board the Asakusa Boat Cruise according to operating arrangements.

The source allows either a Hinode–Asakusa route or an alternative 30-minute Asakusa sightseeing cruise.

Continue into historic Asakusa.

Walk beneath Kaminarimon, along Nakamise Street and into Senso-ji Temple.

After the mountain architecture of Shirakawa-go and Takayama, Tokyo’s traditional temple district shows how heritage survives even inside a huge modern metropolis.

Later, ascend the Main Deck of Tokyo Tower, approximately 150 metres above the city.

Finish in Shibuya and Harajuku, where modern shopping, fashion and city culture take over.

The contrasts are immediate.

Your morning begins with gardens and temple architecture; your afternoon ends among some of Asia’s most energetic modern streets.

Highlights: Imperial Palace East Garden • Hamarikyu • Asakusa Cruise • Kaminarimon • Nakamise • Senso-ji • Tokyo Tower • Shibuya • Harajuku

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 11: TOKYO – NIKKO – TOKYO (B)

Leave Tokyo by coach for the forested mountain region of Nikko.

Visit magnificent Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The source highlights its celebrated Yomeimon Gate, intricate woodcarving, vivid colours, gold leaf and famous artistic details including the Sleeping Cat and Three Wise Monkeys.

Nikko toshogu shrine | enchanting 14-day japan discovery from osaka to tokyo via kyoto, kanazawa, and takayama

Continue to Tamozawa Imperial Villa.

Its inclusion adds another historical layer to the day, ensuring that Nikko is experienced through more than one monument.

Later, continue to either Kegon Falls or Kirifuri Falls, according to final operating arrangements.

The waterfall experience reconnects the cultural heritage of Toshogu with the natural setting that gives Nikko so much of its character.

Return to Tokyo.

The excursion demonstrates once again how quickly Japan can change.

Within a relatively short journey from central Tokyo, modern urban landscapes give way to mountain roads, forested shrine precincts and dramatic waterfalls.

Highlights: Toshogu Shrine • Yomeimon • Three Wise Monkeys • Tamozawa Imperial Villa • Kegon / Kirifuri Falls

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 12: TOKYO – KAMAKURA – YOKOHAMA – TOKYO (B)

Travel towards historic Kamakura.

Begin at Kotoku-in Temple, home of the famous Great Buddha.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka
Kotokuin temple

Continue to Hase Temple, followed by Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and lively Komachi Street.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka

These attractions form an effective sequence.

The Great Buddha provides one of Kamakura’s defining images; Hase offers a more intimate temple atmosphere; Tsurugaoka introduces Shinto heritage; and Komachi returns you to the everyday commercial life of the town.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka

Later, continue to Yokohama.

Visit Yamashita Park and Yokohama Chinatown, both specifically included in the source itinerary.

Enchanting-14-day-japan-discovery-to-tokyo-kyoto-and-osaka
Yokohama yamashita park and china town

The contrast between Kamakura and Yokohama makes today’s excursion particularly interesting.

Kamakura is strongly associated with temples, shrines and historic character.

Yokohama, by comparison, introduces a more cosmopolitan urban atmosphere.

After nearly two weeks of travel, this day acts almost like a miniature summary of Japan itself: traditional heritage in the morning and modern international city life later in the day.

Return to Tokyo.

Highlights: Great Buddha of Kamakura • Hase Temple • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu • Komachi Street • Yamashita Park • Yokohama Chinatown

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 13: TOKYO – FREE DAY AT LEISURE (B)

Your final full day in Japan is deliberately unscheduled.

Enjoy breakfast and decide how you would like to spend the day.

Perhaps return to a favourite Tokyo neighbourhood, complete your shopping, explore independently or simply slow the pace after twelve days of travelling.

Having a free day at the end of a long itinerary is particularly valuable.

There is no pressure to reach another monument or board another train.

Instead, Tokyo becomes yours to experience personally.

Even simple activities can become memorable at this stage of the journey because so much of Japan now feels familiar: ordering food, navigating neighbourhood streets, browsing shops or finding a quiet café.

Return to the hotel at your own pace.

Tomorrow your driver will transfer you to Haneda or Narita Airport.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 14: TOKYO – DEPARTURE (B)

Enjoy your final breakfast in Japan.

At the appropriate time, meet your driver and transfer to either Haneda International Airport or Narita International Airport for your onward flight.

Fourteen days have revealed an unusually broad picture of Japan.

You began in energetic Osaka, travelled to the sacred island landscape of Miyajima and the difficult history of Hiroshima, explored international-era Kobe and classical Kyoto, walked among Nara’s heritage, discovered regional Kanazawa and the mountain architecture of Shirakawa-go and Takayama, then travelled east towards modern Tokyo.

Even the final days continued to expand that picture through Nikko, Kamakura and Yokohama.

This is precisely why the 14-day itinerary works so well for travellers who want more than a conventional first-time route.

It includes the famous Japan people dream of seeing—but also creates space for regional cities, mountain communities and historical transitions that make the journey feel much deeper.

Transfer to the airport.

Meals: Breakfast
Tour Ends: Haneda or Narita International Airport.
