DETAILED DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY:

DAY 01: ARRIVAL IN TOKYO – A WARM WELCOME TO JAPAN [NONE]

As your flight approaches Tokyo, the first chapter of your Japan journey begins beneath you: a vast urban landscape where one of the world’s most advanced cities continues to carry deeply rooted traditions into everyday life.

Upon arrival, meet your local representative and transfer comfortably to your hotel.

Today is intentionally easy.

After a long international flight, there is no need to rush immediately from airport to sightseeing attraction. Check in, settle into your room and allow your body to adjust to the local time.

If energy allows, step outside for your first independent walk.

Tokyo often introduces itself through small details before its famous landmarks begin to make sense: perfectly organised stations, neighbourhood restaurants tucked between modern buildings, immaculate streets, vending machines glowing after dark and an extraordinary sense of order even amid immense urban activity.

This first evening can also be your introduction to Japanese food.

There is no need for a grand dining experience. A small noodle restaurant, sushi counter or Japanese set meal near the hotel can be just as memorable because the experience is new—the language around you, the careful presentation of a meal and the quiet rituals of everyday dining.

For travellers arriving late, simply rest.

Tomorrow brings a full introduction to Tokyo, travelling from the symbolic world of Japan’s Imperial Palace to Asakusa’s temple streets, Tokyo’s waterfront and the extraordinary urban energy of Shibuya.

Tonight, however, nothing needs to be achieved.

Japan has already begun.

Highlights: Arrival in Tokyo • Airport welcome • Transfer to hotel • Free time to relax and acclimatise

Meals: None
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 02: TOKYO – IMPERIAL HERITAGE, ASAKUSA, HAMARIKYU & SHIBUYA [B]

After breakfast, depart for your first full day in the Japanese capital.

Begin around the Imperial Palace, including the celebrated view towards Nijubashi Bridge. Surrounded by broad open spaces, stone fortifications and greenery, the palace area provides a calm introduction to the historical centre of Tokyo before the day moves towards the city’s busier neighbourhoods.

Continue to Asakusa, one of the places where traditional Tokyo remains most visible.

Pass beneath Kaminarimon – the Thunder Gate, then walk along bustling Nakamise Street towards Senso-ji Temple. The approach itself is part of the experience: souvenir shops, traditional snacks and streams of visitors create an atmosphere that has little in common with Tokyo’s futuristic business districts.

Senso-ji has remained an important cultural and religious landmark in Tokyo for generations, allowing visitors to witness worship and everyday temple life rather than merely viewing a historic monument.

Next, experience the city from the water aboard the Asakusa Boat Cruise. Depending on local operations, the journey may continue towards Hinode Pier or operate as a shorter circular cruise from Asakusa Pier, with views towards Tokyo Skytree and the riverside cityscape.

ASAKUSA BOAT CRUISE

Continue to Hamarikyu Gardens, formerly associated with a feudal lord’s residence and the Tokugawa shogunate. Traditional landscaping, seawater moats and carefully controlled gardens form an almost surreal contrast with modern high-rise buildings beyond the trees.

Later, ascend the Main Deck of Tokyo Tower, around 150 metres above the city, before heading into the contemporary energy of Shibuya Crossing.

Finish with Shibuya Sky, subject to the confirmed operating schedule.

After temples, gardens and imperial landscapes, standing above Shibuya as the city lights begin to glow perfectly captures Tokyo’s extraordinary range.

Highlights: Imperial Palace • Nijubashi Bridge • Kaminarimon • Nakamise Street • Senso-ji • Asakusa Cruise • Hamarikyu Gardens • Tokyo Tower • Shibuya Crossing • Shibuya Sky

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Tokyo.

DAY 03: TOKYO – NIKKO | MOUNTAIN BEAUTY & TOKUGAWA LEGACY [B]

Depart Tokyo early, around 07:00–07:15, leaving the capital behind for the mountain landscapes of Nikko.

As the city gradually disappears, the character of the journey changes. Nikko is not simply another collection of monuments; its appeal comes from the way cultural heritage sits within forests, waterfalls, lakes and mountain terrain.

Your first major scenic experience is the Akechidaira Ropeway.

The ride takes only a few minutes, but from the upper viewpoint the landscape opens dramatically towards Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls.

Rather than seeing each attraction separately, the elevated perspective allows you to understand how lake, forest and waterfall form a single mountain landscape.

After time for lunch, continue to magnificent Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

The shrine is closely associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, who died in 1616. His grandson, Tokugawa Iemitsu, later developed the magnificent shrine complex centred around Ieyasu’s mausoleum.

The visual language here is dramatically different from many other Japanese religious sites.

Look closely at the celebrated Yomeimon Gate, covered with intricate woodcarving, brilliant colours and gold leaf.

Throughout the complex are famous carvings including the Sleeping Cat and the celebrated Three Wise Monkeys—“see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”

It is easy to focus on decorative details, but Toshogu is equally compelling for what it communicates about power, commemoration and the Tokugawa era.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto
Nikko toshogu shrine

By late afternoon, today’s journey has taken you very far in spirit from central Tokyo.

The capital’s skyscrapers have been replaced by forested mountains, waterfalls and ornate shrine architecture.

Continue to your hotel.

The source program mentions an evening dinner but also explicitly states that the estimate does not include the cost of dinner; this therefore needs to be reconfirmed in the final quotation.

Highlights: Akechidaira Ropeway • Lake Chuzenji • Kegon Falls • Toshogu Shrine • Yomeimon Gate • Three Wise Monkeys

Meals: Breakfast; dinner payable/reconfirmation required according to source
Overnight: Nikko.

DAY 04: NIKKO – KAMAKURA – LAKE KAWAGUCHIKO [meals: B/D]

After breakfast, leave Nikko and travel towards historic Kamakura.

Begin at Kotoku-in Temple, home to the celebrated Great Buddha of Kamakura.

According to the supplied program, the great bronze figure rises approximately 11.3 metres, or about 13.4 metres including its pedestal, and weighs around 121 tons.

Yet its impact is less about statistics than atmosphere.

Seated beneath the open sky, the Buddha carries a sense of calm that creates an immediate change of pace after yesterday’s highly decorated Toshogu Shrine.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto
Kotokuin temple (kamakura great buddha)

Continue to Hase-dera Temple.

The original itinerary places particular emphasis on the temple’s seasonal landscapes: cherry blossoms and peonies in spring, more than 2,500 hydrangeas around early summer and rich autumn colour later in the year.

Continue to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, one of the most prominent sacred sites in central Kamakura.

Ascend its broad stone approach and enjoy the blend of historic architecture and natural surroundings before allowing time around Komachi Street, where cafés, shops and local snacks introduce a more contemporary side of the old capital.

Komachi street | 10-day journey through japan from tokyo to osaka via fuji, hakone and kyoto

Later in the afternoon, leave the coast and continue inland towards Lake Kawaguchiko.

The atmosphere changes once again.

Where Kamakura is defined by temples and shrine culture, Kawaguchiko opens onto mountain landscapes dominated—when conditions allow—by the unmistakable silhouette of Mt. Fuji.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto
Kawaguchiko lake

The original itinerary particularly highlights the combination of Fuji with seasonal trees and flowers in spring and autumn. Visibility, however, always depends on weather.

Check in and enjoy the evening surrounded by the landscapes of the Fuji region.

Highlights: Great Buddha of Kamakura • Hase-dera • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu • Komachi Street • Lake Kawaguchiko • Mt. Fuji scenery

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
Overnight: Kawaguchiko / Fuji area.

Operational Note: The source text says “Overnight in Tokyo” after transferring to a hotel in Kawaguchiko or Hakone. This conflicts with both the day’s transfer and the listed Fuji/Hakone hotels. For presentation, Kawaguchiko/Fuji area is used here; final operations should reconfirm.

DAY 05: CHUREITO PAGODA – OSHINO HAKKAI – OWAKUDANI – LAKE ASHI – HAKONE [B/D]

Today is devoted to one of the most recognisable landscapes in Japan: the region surrounding Mt. Fuji and Hakone.

Begin at Chureito Pagoda.

Reaching the famous viewpoint involves approximately 398 steps, but the reward—particularly when the weather is clear—is one of Japan’s classic compositions: the pagoda in the foreground with Mt. Fuji rising beyond.

Cherry blossom season can transform the setting even further, although Fuji visibility can never be guaranteed.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto

Continue to Oshino Hakkai, where clear spring-fed ponds introduce a softer and more intimate landscape.

The source program particularly comments on the intense clarity and blue appearance of the water, creating a tranquil counterpoint to the enormous scale of Mt. Fuji.

Later travel into the geothermal landscape of Owakudani.

Take the ropeway and look across Hakone’s volcanic terrain. Steam, mineral landscapes and mountain ridges create a radically different environment from Kawaguchiko.

This is also the place to encounter Hakone’s famous black eggs, traditionally prepared using the geothermal heat of the volcanic area.

Ropeway and view of mountain fuji from owakudani, hakone. Japan.

Continue towards Lake Ashi and board the Hakone sightseeing boat.

With forested mountains surrounding the water, the cruise creates a peaceful conclusion to a day filled with volcanic landscapes and Fuji viewpoints. When skies are clear, Mt. Fuji may appear again in the distance.

Transfer to your hotel in Hakone.

Lake ashi boat cruise

The Fuji–Hakone chapter of the tour succeeds because it does not rely on a single viewpoint.

Instead, you experience the region through pagodas, spring water, volcanic valleys, ropeways and a mountain lake—each revealing a different character of Japan’s most famous landscape.

Highlights: Chureito Pagoda • Mt. Fuji • Oshino Hakkai • Hakone Ropeway • Owakudani • Black Eggs • Lake Ashi Cruise

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
Overnight: Hakone.

DAY 06: HAKONE – SHINKANSEN TO KYOTO – ARASHIYAMA [B]

After breakfast, transfer towards Odawara or Mishima Station.

Board Japan’s celebrated Shinkansen bullet train for Kyoto. The source program anticipates a morning departure and arrival around midday, depending upon the selected station and final train schedule.

Travel to tokyo by bullet train | 10-day journey through japan from tokyo to osaka via fuji, hakone and kyoto
Hakone shinkansen bullet train to kyoto

The journey is more than a transfer.

After several days travelling by road through mountains and regional landscapes, the smooth efficiency of the Shinkansen offers a very different expression of Japan.

Upon arrival in Kyoto, meet your local guide and continue towards Arashiyama.

Begin at Tenryu-ji Temple, described in the itinerary as one of the representative Zen temples of Arashiyama.

The gardens and temple setting introduce a more restrained aesthetic than Nikko’s highly decorated Toshogu Shrine.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto

Continue through the celebrated Arashiyama Bamboo Path.

Tall bamboo rises above the walkway, filtering the daylight and creating one of Kyoto’s most distinctive natural environments.

Nearby, walk towards Togetsu Bridge, where the river and surrounding hills give the district a broader sense of landscape.

Togetsukyo bridge 2 | 10-day journey through japan from tokyo to osaka via fuji, hakone and kyoto
Togetsu bridge

This relatively focused first afternoon in Kyoto is deliberately well paced.

Instead of attempting to cover all the city’s major temples immediately after arriving by train, you begin with one coherent district—Zen architecture, bamboo and riverside scenery.

Later, transfer to the hotel and check in.

Your evening is free.

Kyoto after sunset can be particularly atmospheric. Streets become quieter, lanterns begin to glow outside small restaurants and the city’s historic character can feel more tangible once the major daytime sightseeing crowds have dispersed.

Tomorrow brings the deeper cultural heart of Kyoto: the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari and Gion.

Highlights: Shinkansen • Kyoto arrival • Tenryu-ji • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove • Togetsu Bridge

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 07: KYOTO’S TIMELESS ELEGANCE – KINKAKU-JI, KIYOMIZU-DERA, FUSHIMI INARI & GION [B]

Today brings together several of Kyoto’s most distinctive cultural landscapes.

Begin at Kinkaku-ji – the Golden Pavilion.

The architecture is striking on its own, but its real beauty comes from the relationship between the pavilion, water, surrounding gardens and seasonal landscape.

Continue to Kiyomizu-dera, one of the key historical monuments included in the original program.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto
Kiyomizu temple

From the temple district, descend through Sannenzaka.

Here Kyoto becomes more intimate.

Stone paving, traditional machiya-style buildings, small shops and narrow lanes form an atmosphere completely different from Tokyo’s enormous avenues.

The itinerary identifies Sannenzaka as a designated Traditional Buildings Preservation District, helping maintain the appearance that makes this part of Kyoto so evocative.

After lunch, continue towards Fushimi Inari Taisha.

The shrine is internationally recognised for its progression of vermilion Senbon Torii, often translated as the “thousand torii gates.”

Walk beneath the gateways at your own pace.

There is no need to complete the entire mountain route to appreciate the atmosphere; even the lower sections offer a powerful sense of repetition, colour and movement.

Finish around Gion.

This historic district combines traditional streetscapes with Kyoto’s hanamachi culture, historically associated with geiko, maiko and teahouses.

Rather than approaching Gion simply as a place to search for performers, allow time to appreciate its wooden façades, intimate lanes and carefully preserved atmosphere.

Japan tour to kyoto 12 | 10-day journey through japan from tokyo to osaka via fuji, hakone and kyoto
Gion street

By evening, Kyoto begins to reveal what makes it so different from the other cities on the journey.

Its beauty rarely comes from scale alone.

It lies in detail, restraint, garden design, historic streets and the continuing relationship between spiritual tradition and everyday urban life.

Highlights: Kinkaku-ji • Kiyomizu-dera • Sannenzaka • Fushimi Inari • Senbon Torii • Gion

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 08: NORTHERN KYOTO – INE BOATHOUSES, AMANOHASHIDATE & MIYAMA [B]

Today leaves central Kyoto behind and reveals a side of the prefecture that many first-time visitors never see.

Travel north towards Ine, a coastal community famous for its traditional boathouses.

The original program describes around 230 such buildings following Ine Bay, traditionally combining boat storage on the lower floor with residential space above.

What makes Ine compelling is not a single monument.

It is the relationship between an entire settlement and the sea.

Homes follow the shape of the bay, creating a waterfront landscape developed around generations of maritime life.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto
Ine boat houses

Continue to Amanohashidate.

The source describes the natural formation as a roughly 3.6-kilometre sandbar, between approximately 20 and 170 metres wide and covered by thousands of pine trees. It is recognised in the itinerary as one of Japan’s three celebrated scenic views.

Travel to Kasamatsu Park for an elevated view.

From above, the pine-covered sandbar stretches dramatically across the water, revealing why this landscape has been admired for generations.

After lunch, continue—if timing permits—to Miyama.

The source describes a traditional village of thatched houses, some around 150–230 years old, preserved as an important example of rural Japanese architecture.

Miyama creates an almost perfect contrast with Tokyo earlier in the tour.

Instead of observation decks, skyscrapers and major stations, the beauty here lies in modest houses, rural scale and continuity.

10-day-journey-through-japan-from-tokyo-to-osaka-via-mount-fuji-and-kyoto

Return to Kyoto in the evening.

Today’s experience expands the idea of “Kyoto” far beyond temples and geisha districts.

It reveals fishing traditions, coastal landscapes and mountain villages—another reminder that Japan’s cultural identity is inseparable from geography.

Highlights: Ine Boathouses • Ine Bay • Amanohashidate • Kasamatsu Park • Miyama • Traditional countryside

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kyoto.

DAY 09: KYOTO – NARA – OSAKA [B]

Leave Kyoto early and travel towards ancient Nara.

Begin at Todai-ji Temple.

Even before reaching the principal temple structures, the immense Nandaimon Gate creates a powerful impression. The source itinerary records it at approximately 25.4 metres high—roughly comparable with a seven- or eight-storey building.

Todaiji temple | 10-day journey through japan from tokyo to osaka via fuji, hakone and kyoto
Todaiji temple in nara , japan

Continue into Nara Park, where deer roam freely through the parkland and temple precincts.

For families, the deer are often among the most memorable parts of the visit, yet Nara’s deeper appeal lies in the way religious sites and landscape merge together.

Continue to Kasuga Taisha, completing the Nara heritage experience.

After lunch, travel onward to Osaka.

Your introduction to the city begins from above at Umeda Sky Building.

The open-air Sky Garden Observatory rises approximately 173 metres above ground, offering an expansive panorama over the Osaka cityscape.

Continue past Osaka Castle, associated in the program with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Japan’s late-sixteenth-century political unification.

The source describes the castle visit as sightseeing from the coach, with additional observation-floor arrangements subject to available time.

Finish around Shinsaibashi, Namba or Dotonbori, depending on timing.

This is the perfect final-night contrast to Kyoto.

Where Kyoto can feel refined and contemplative, Osaka is informal, energetic and strongly associated with food, entertainment and street life.

Enjoy the illuminated signs, shopping arcades and busy restaurant districts before checking in.

Highlights: Todai-ji • Nara Park • Kasuga Taisha • Umeda Sky Building • Osaka Castle • Shinsaibashi • Namba • Dotonbori

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Osaka.

DAY 10: OSAKA – FAREWELL, JAPAN [B]

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.

Depending on your flight schedule, the morning may remain free for last-minute shopping, an independent walk or simply a relaxed final coffee before leaving Japan.

At the appropriate time, meet your driver and transfer to Kansai International Airport.

Ten days ago, Japan was still an idea.

Now the memories have become remarkably varied.

There was Tokyo’s urban scale and the temple lanes of Asakusa; Nikko’s waterfalls and ornate Tokugawa heritage; the quiet presence of Kamakura’s Great Buddha; Mt. Fuji appearing beyond lakes and pagodas; Hakone’s volcanic terrain; the precision of the Shinkansen; Kyoto’s bamboo, golden temples and vermilion torii gates; remote boathouses in Ine; rural Miyama; Nara’s deer; and finally Osaka’s energetic skyline and food streets.

That diversity is the great strength of this itinerary.

It does not attempt to define Japan through one city or one type of experience.

Instead, it reveals a country through a sequence of contrasts: modern and traditional, urban and rural, spiritual and everyday, mountain and coastline.

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

Meals: Breakfast
Tour Ends: Kansai International Airport.
