DAY 01: HANOI – ARRIVAL – WATER PUPPET SHOW

Welcome to Hanoi, a capital where more than a thousand years of history live alongside the rhythms of contemporary Vietnam.

Upon arrival at Noi Bai International Airport, complete immigration formalities, collect your luggage and continue into the arrival hall, where our representative will be waiting to welcome you. Transfer by private vehicle to your hotel in central Hanoi and check in, subject to the hotel’s standard check-in time.

Rather than filling the arrival day with a demanding sightseeing schedule, the afternoon is intentionally kept relaxed. After a long international journey, having time to settle into the hotel, take a shower, recover from jet lag and simply begin observing the city often makes for a far more enjoyable introduction to Vietnam.

If energy allows, take a first walk around the historic centre. Hanoi’s Old Quarter evolved around traditional commercial streets where particular crafts and goods were once concentrated; today its narrow lanes remain packed with family businesses, street-food stalls, cafés, temples and an almost continuous stream of scooters. Nearby Hoan Kiem Lake remains one of the city’s social hearts, where Hanoians walk, exercise, meet friends and slow down after work.

Later in the day, enjoy a traditional Vietnamese water puppet performance.

Water puppetry, or múa rối nước, developed in the villages and rice-growing communities of the Red River Delta roughly a thousand years ago. In earlier times, flooded rice fields themselves could become stages. Puppeteers worked behind screens while wooden figures appeared to move magically across the surface of the water. The stories often depict farming, fishing, village festivals, mythical creatures and episodes from Vietnamese folklore, accompanied by traditional musicians and singers.

For first-time visitors, the performance is an enjoyable introduction to the rural culture of northern Vietnam — playful enough to enjoy without understanding Vietnamese, yet culturally meaningful once the symbolism behind the scenes becomes clear.

After the show, return to your hotel or continue exploring the lake and Old Quarter independently.

DAY 02: HANOI – HALONG BAY – SUNG SOT CAVE – TI TOP ISLAND – OVERNIGHT CRUISE (B/L/D)

After breakfast at the hotel, leave Hanoi on a shared shuttle bus in the morning and travel east toward Ha Long Bay, where mountains that once formed on land now rise dramatically from the sea.

The UNESCO World Heritage property is today officially known as Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago. Covering 65,650 hectares and containing 1,133 islands and islets, it represents one of the world’s outstanding examples of marine-invaded tropical tower karst. Limestone formations appear everywhere — isolated pillars, forested islands, hidden caves and small enclosed lagoons shaped by geological processes over immense periods of time.

Around midday, arrive at the cruise harbour and complete check-in procedures. Transfer aboard the assigned overnight cruise, where the crew will welcome you with a drink and provide a safety briefing before departure.

Lunch is served as the vessel begins sailing deeper into the bay. This is one of the pleasures of an overnight cruise: there is no need to rush from viewpoint to viewpoint. Instead, the landscape slowly unfolds outside the restaurant and cabin windows.

During the afternoon, travel by tender to Sung Sot Cave – Surprise Cave, one of the best-known caverns on the standard Ha Long Bay cruise route. Inside, a sequence of large chambers displays sculpted limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites, while openings near the cave provide views back across the bay.

Continue to Ti Top Island, named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov following his visit to Ha Long Bay in 1962. Travellers may relax by the water when conditions permit or climb the stone steps toward the viewpoint. The ascent requires some effort, but the panorama across dozens of limestone islands is one of the classic views of the bay. Return to the cruise during the late afternoon and enjoy time on the sundeck as daylight begins to soften.

A Vietnamese cooking demonstration is normally organised before dinner, followed by the evening meal in the onboard restaurant.

After dinner, the bay becomes quiet. Guests may relax on deck, join onboard entertainment, try squid fishing or simply sit beneath the night sky surrounded by dark limestone silhouettes.

DAY 03: HALONG BAY – LUON CAVE – HANOI (B/L)

Wake early to experience Ha Long Bay before the day’s boat traffic fully begins.

For early risers, the morning usually starts with a gentle Tai Chi session on the sundeck. Against the background of quiet water and limestone peaks emerging from the morning haze, the slow movements offer a peaceful beginning to the day.

A light breakfast follows as the cruise moves toward the morning activity area.

Today’s main experience is Luon Cave, a low limestone passage opening onto a sheltered lagoon surrounded by steep karst walls and vegetation. Unlike large dry caves such as Sung Sot, Luon Cave is best experienced from the water.

Guests normally have two ways of exploring the area: kayaking, for those who would like to paddle independently, or a traditional bamboo boat rowed by a local boat operator. Exact arrangements, including any separate bamboo-boat charge, depend on the confirmed cruise program.

The experience offers a different perspective on Ha Long Bay. From water level, the huge scale of the limestone formations becomes more apparent, while the quieter lagoon creates a contrast with the open channels travelled by the larger vessels.

Return to the cruise afterwards and enjoy time to freshen up and pack.

Cabin check-out normally takes place during the morning while guests remain aboard. Rather than ending abruptly, the cruise continues back through the limestone landscape as brunch or an early lunch is served.

Approaching the harbour is a good time to reflect on why an overnight cruise remains preferable to a hurried day excursion for many international visitors. The experience is not only about ticking off Sung Sot Cave or Ti Top Island; it is about seeing the bay change character from afternoon sunlight to sunset, darkness and finally early morning.

After disembarkation, rejoin the shuttle vehicle for the journey back to Hanoi.

Arrival in the capital is normally during the afternoon, depending on road and traffic conditions. Check back into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Hanoi tends to feel different after spending a night on the water. The traffic, café culture and busy pavements immediately bring you back into urban Vietnam.

The evening is yours to explore independently. Wander through the Old Quarter, search out a bowl of phở, try bún chả, settle into a pavement café or simply enjoy a quiet dinner after the cruise.

After breakfast, today is deliberately flexible.

Travellers who enjoy a slower pace can keep the day completely free, giving themselves time to experience Hanoi beyond a fixed sightseeing schedule.

You might spend the morning wandering through the Old Quarter, visit a museum, enjoy an unhurried Vietnamese coffee beside Hoan Kiem Lake, explore the French Quarter or simply take time to shop, eat and observe daily life.

Leave Hanoi in the morning and travel south through the Red River Delta toward Ninh Binh, a landscape of rice fields, waterways and limestone mountains frequently described as “Ha Long Bay on Land.” Vietnam Tourism notes that Ninh Binh’s riverine scenery is best appreciated both from a sampan and from the high viewpoints above its karst landscape.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Begin at Hoa Lu, one of the most historically significant sites in northern Vietnam.

After unifying the country, Dinh Bo Linh became emperor in 968, established Hoa Lu as his capital and named the state Dai Co Viet. Hoa Lu remained the political centre through the Dinh and Early Le dynasties until 1009; in 1010, Ly Thai To moved the capital to Thang Long, present-day Hanoi.

Surrounded by limestone mountains and waterways that once provided natural defence, Hoa Lu helps visitors understand why geography mattered so greatly to early Vietnamese state-building.

Visit the temples honouring King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, while your guide introduces the dynastic struggles and political transformation that shaped the emergence of an independent Vietnamese kingdom.

Trang An Landscape Complex

In the afternoon, travel to Trang An, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage property.

Board a traditional sampan and glide into an extraordinary world of forest-covered limestone towers, tranquil waterways and cave passages.

Trang An is much more than a beautiful boat ride. Archaeological evidence shows human occupation of this landscape extending back more than 30,000 years, while its submerged valleys, cave networks and tower-karst formations record major climatic and geological changes. UNESCO describes the site as an exceptional combination of natural beauty, geology and human cultural history.

Boat routes and the caves or temples visited can vary according to water levels and the operating route assigned on the day.

Mua Cave & Ngoa Long Viewpoint

The final stop is Mua Cave, better known among travellers for its dramatic mountain viewpoint.

Approximately 500 stone steps lead toward the ridge and summit viewpoints. Those who make the climb are rewarded, weather permitting, with a sweeping panorama across the Ngo Dong River, rice fields and limestone mountains of Ninh Binh.

The climb is optional. Guests who prefer not to tackle the steps can remain in the landscaped lower area.

Return to Hanoi in the late afternoon.

At the appropriate time, our driver will meet you at the hotel and transfer you by private vehicle to Noi Bai International Airport for your onward flight.
