Always wanted to down a shot of rice wine that floats a still-beating cobra heart? How about a little gecko in your cocktail?

Le Mat Snake Village in Hanoi’s Long Bien District is the spot to make your reptilian gustatory dreams come true. A snake will set you back VND600,000 to VND1 million, but it will come prepared in seven traditional dishes, and none _ and we mean none _ of the saurian parts will go to waste.

Le Mat Snake Village is famous for its tradition of catching snakes. In fact, some say that the only snakes left in the village and its environs are the ones bred in captivity to supply meat to the snake restaurants in the village. Only a half-hour’s drive from central Hanoi, Le Mat Snake Village specialises in serving grass snake and cobra dishes such as soup with snake meat, snake tail with crispy lemongrass, deep-fried snake bones and spring rolls with snake. Delicioussss! It is about 7km Northeast of Hanoi off Highway 1A., Vietnam.

Itinerary :

Hanoi Jeep Tours to Le Mat Snake Village

You will be picked up at your hotel. Jeep will drive you through the French Quarter- the pleasant shady district dotted with small parks and colonial-era villas to West Lake – the Hanoi’s largest natural lake, 17kms around the lake will bring you many different feelings. You will drive by residential areas, pagodas, shops, international hotels, “love hotels”, water park, restaurants, coffee shops and especially you will encounter many illegal fishermen- the ones who earn living from catching fish illegally from the lake (believe or not but many of them can feed their whole families even own big houses).

Following the lake, you will drive cross the Red River, travel along the dyke. Not too far from city center but you could see the differences. It is like the countryside with gardens, more trees. Jeep will stop at the Weapon Museum for your visit. Thousands of weapons from the simple to modern ones used for protecting the country are displayed throughout Vietnam’s history. Walk around the museum, by the weapons you could get to know more about what have happened to this country in the past.

Le Mat

Back to your Jeep and continuing driving on the dyke, your next stop is Le Mat Village (Snake Village). This is no ordinary dining experience; it is for stomachs with a sense of adventure. You will go to a restaurant specializing in snake meat. Listen to the owner introduce his restaurant and cooking methods, then the adventure begins. You can choose the type of snake you want and it will be prepared to your order. From one snake, it could be served in 4, 5 dishes (soup, deep fried; stir fried….). For the locals, snake meat is not only food but medicine so just relax and enjoy your meal.

After the “healthy meal”, drive back to down town and drop you at your hotel.
